Our Purpose

Institutional Advancement was created at West Virginia State University to:

  • coordinate the institutional planning process;
  • strengthen financial support for all areas of the university;
  • strengthen instructional, research, and support functions by developing and managing governmental and private grants and other contributions to the University;
  • enhance the image of the University and its programs through a comprehensive publications, Internet services, marketing, and advancement programs;
  • coordinate fund raising programs; 
  • strengthen, coordinate, and monitor the Research and Development Corporation;
  • coordinate instructional assessment, data collection, analysis, accreditation support, and reporting; and 
  • coordinate federal and state governmental relations.

Institutional Advancement serves West Virginia State University in many ways. Planning, Land-Grant programs, institutional effectiveness, communication services, fund raising and grant development and management. 

Institutional Advancement staff is charged with:

  • finding innovative ways to increase private, state, and federal funds for both existing and future programs;
  • interfacing with all administrative areas to plan and manage existing programs;
  • increasing support from the corporate community, alumni and friends of the university;
  • providing effective external and internal communication services; 
  • providing oversight and monitoring ofTitle III programs; and
  • providing the necessary information and analyses to enable University managers to make informed decisions.

Institutional Advancement coordinates and monitors the  West Virginia State University’s strategic plan, “Fulfilling the Mission.”  Since strategic planning efforts (in three-year cycles) were initiated in 1987, the University has been guided by the Planning Office in major improvements through five of these cycles.  We connect all institutional planning processes.  The strategic planning process sets the University action plan.  The academic plan established institutional direction.  And, the management plan involves the human resources needed for accomplishing University goals through curriculum enhancement, research, and public service programs.

Institutional Advancement staff members work to strengthen the image of the University; to secure external funding; and to provide professional products and information for the campus community.  Tremendous pride is taken to provide service to the University and its students, faculty, and staff.
